Dean, a smalltown newspaper reporter, who is simultaneously covering a sensational rape-murder and trying to seduce his pretty nextdoor neighbor, is arrested as a "peeping tom" and questioned by detectives as a suspect in the rape-murder case. Lack of sleep and emotional turmoil combine to cause Dean to realize any human has in himself what it takes to commit the most heinous crime, and confesses to this potential, which is taken as a confession to the rape-murder.
